With the trauma the girls experienced (before this special), the reveal Neiru was an AI (how they would’ve handled this), getting Neiru back from the dreamworld and an epic fight to settle things with Frill there would have been enough content for a long OVA series or maybe even an entire second season. I expected a final fight at this point, but no… I was shocked: Wait, this is it!? And at the very end, after quite some time, she decides to go back to the capsule machine to find Neiru. The time skip(s) confused the hell out of me. Ai just casually stops talking to Neiru (but we’ve never been shown precisely why that is). Momoe just looked liked she was ready to die when she was standing on the train platform (but was that her intention? no clue) They just dropped the bomb that Neiru was an AI without really doing anything with it. At a certain point, I wasn’t sure if we were shown a parallel world or something as our girls didn’t see to be their ‘normal’ selves at all. It clearly shows that they had to wrap up everything in this episode. This special episode just killed my enthusiasm for the anime and left me bitter. Honestly, WEP would have been better off if they had ended the series unfinished. But there was clearly passion behind this project and I just admire it so much for being an interesting failure. ![]() There's no gatcha game, no manga, no anything to promote here and they took a huge risk alienating their audience. I'm sad that it ended this way but a bad episode of Wonder Egg is still better than a lot of shows which have no ambition. It didn't condescend or resort to tropes or objectify the characters. ![]() The writing up to the end was almost shockingly good and I just appreciated how it tried to have respect and kindness for young women and especially those struggling with very real, normal problems. This is still probably best of the year for me. It should have been about their emotional journeys and personal growth and it was, up until episode 10 or 11. It was introduced late and didn't feel relevant to the character's real lives that we saw. It's the sci-fi/mystery plotting that fell flat. All the stuff about suicide and depression seemed written by someone who really knows it or did a lot of research, they even handled a (sorta?) trans character with more grace and nuance than almost any show. It had amazing characters and the emotional moments felt authentic, it really captured how fleeting and intense friendships can be for young people. ![]()
